SOTA Vanguard / Sphinx Project 9 PJ9-2 CD PLAYER w/Remote Parts/repair
We have never come across one of these CD players. Sota is obviously known for their great turntables. In the early to mid 90's Sota marketed a small number of CD players. In our research and looking under the hood, we believe that this player was manufactured by a Dutch company named Siltech. This is a Sphinx Project 9 CD player with Sota branding on it. The unit was fully tested and is in good working order. However, occasionally the unit will not read a disc. I just reboot the player and it resumes working. For this reason though, the unit is being sold as is, for parts or repair.
We found that the unit uses a CDM based Philips transport and that a Philips remote would work on the unit. Included is a full function remote that is a clone of the Phillips/Marantz RC 63CD remote. It controls all the necessary functions. Volume (when variable rca outputs are used), track forward and back, fast forward, rewind, play, pause, stop, time, programing, shuffle, repeat. We acquired this in a collection from a gentleman that lived overseas and bought most of his equipment out of the US. It's a superb sounding player. We have been running it in one of our systems for a few weeks and we have been very pleased with it. There is not much information out there on this unit, and they don't seem to change hands much at all.
Physically the unit is in very good condition. The faceplate only has minor blemishes. The top shroud is a glossy black finish, and it has many scuffs and light scratches, but is still in good condition. I could not get them to show up well in the pictures. There are no dents, and no deep scratches.
On the back, the unit has Digital outputs, Optical outputs, as well as fixed and variable analog outputs. There is also a pair of line inputs. On the front there is a headphone output, with an attenuator on the back to control the volume of the headphone output.
