B&K Components ST-140 Stereo Power Amplifier
For sale, we have an early version of the B&K Components ST-140 Stereo Power Amplifier. This early version has an iron core transformer. It was recapped by the previous owner using modern electrolytics. The main filter capacitors were not replaced, and test within spec. The rear power switch was bypassed by the previous owner, and we installed an new power switch on the front of the unit. The prior owner also installed Vampire RCA jacks. A very capable, warm sounding amp, we enjoyed listening to it. The previous owner was a hobbyist, and we obtained his collection, which consisted of pieces that were modest, well reviewed, and fit into the best bang for the buck category. Chances are, if you are looking at this listing, you know the history of this amp, and how well received it was.
On our bench, prior to powering up the amp, we inspected the inside, and saw no signs of bulging caps, and no signs of heat stress to any resistors, transistors, etc. After the physical inspection, we powered up the amp on our bench. In order to test the output and check to see the amp was in proper working order, we hooked it up to our Sencore PA81 Stereo Stereo Power Amplifier Analyzer acting as a dummy load. Using an audio generator, we ran a 1k signal through the amps input, slowly increasing the amplitude while monitoring the output on our oscilloscope for signs of noise, clipping, distortion, or improper channel balance. Once we saw the amp was in proper working condition we ran the unit for a few days through one of our house systems, where it performed flawlessly.
Physically the unit is in good shape. The faceplate and brushed gold handles present themselves well. The sides and back are in very good shape, while the top has several marks and scratches. There are no dents or and the amp is a nice looking piece. Please review the many pictures that we have included in the listing for further details.
We don't have the original box for this unit, but we take packaging and shipping seriously. We spare no expense and use heavy duty boxes, several inches of polyethylene foam on all sides of the unit, and use water activated, fiber reinforced tape on all seams.
