Here we have an ultra rare Krell PAM-1 Dual Mono Preamplifier. We obtained it from the original owner along with a Krell KSA-50 power amplifier that we also have for sale. This wonderful early Krell preamp is built with the finest components. (See details below as well as the pictures of the unit). Physically the unit is in very good shape. The faceplate shows very little sign of wear, a few light scratches that are barely visible. There are some scratches and blemishes on the top, back and bottom of the unit. The right side of the preamp and the back sides of the two power supplies has the previous owners ss number etched into it. We placed our inventory stickers over the marks. The two power supplies are in very good physical condition other than the etchings. We recapped both power supplies long life modern electrolytic capacitors (Vishay). The preamp was fully tested and performed perfectly. It has a great phono section. We fell in love with the PAM-1 and KSA 50 combination. Along with the amp, we are including the original Sales brochure, and a printed copy of the owners manual. We don't have the original box, but rest assured it will be packed with great care using heavy duty boxes, using either polystyrene, Instapak, or a combination of the two.
From the Krell PAM-1 sales brochure:
The Krell preamp is unlike any other in the history of the high-end audio industry. Its true monophonic design represents the pinnacle of electronics as it applies to the art of reproducing music. The preamp has tremendous imaging capabilities, an effortless sound presentation and sound stage that actually capture the live experience. The Krell design exhibits an unprecedented ability to sound musical, unlike the other solid state preamps on the market.
Each channel of the Krell preamp is a completely separate amplification unit, sharing nothing electrical with its adjacent counterpart. There have been other attempts at this type of separation, such as using separate chases; but the cost of this approach has proven prohibitive. Krell, however, in its search for the perfect sound, has taken a single case and mounted two separate and completely isolated circuits within it. Each mono preamp has its own separate and outboard power supply. This type of configuration - the electrically separate approach - yields the greatest separation, and the lowest interaction, of one channel on the other. The Krell design is thus capable of musical performance that is totally neutral. It will not add any coloration to the integrity of the input source.
The Krell preamp uses all 1% metal film resistors and 1% polycarbonate capacitors in its equalization stage boasting a greater than .1% accuracy. These capacitors are low distortion, low loss type, each electrically and sonically tested for their integrity. The potentiometers used are a low distortion mono type similar to those used in high accuracy servo devices. In fact the Krell potentiometers are the finest we could find for audio use. There are no finer, nor are there any more reliable
Each transistor is beta curved and matched. The devices are selected for the lowest noise (greater than 90 dB in normal phono). The preamp boasts 25000 microfarads of capacitance in each channel, and each channel is fully regulated and decoupled from the audio gain sections: moving coil, moving magnet and high level. The moving coil stage has adjustable input impedance. Three positions are provided: hi 60-100 ohms, medium 24-40 ohms, and lo 1-15 ohms. There is a switch on the back panel for selection of "moving coil" or "moving magnet." The very RCA jacks used in the Krell preamp are a novel item. This gold plated (over silver, over brass) jack can be used with any RCA plug on the market. When used with the male counterpart, it will actually make its ground contact before "hot." This condition allows the user to plug and unplug his audio connectors without turning off the equipment. The male connector can be supplied by any Krell Dealer on special order.
Cosmetically, the Krell preamp is of the highest order. The faceplate and logo plate are machined to extremely high tolerances. All the characters are engraved and gold filled. The knobs pass through 10 different operations before they are completed. Bothe the nickel plated knobs and the anodized faceplate are designed to last a lifetime.
