Tubes, transistors, digital or analogue are but a few areas of debate. I do not intend to take up any of those controversies here. For my purposes, there are basically two types of audiophiles, those who are fortunate enough to have dedicated sound rooms and, those who do not.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFor those of you who have dedicated rooms, you can listen to music whenever you wish, anytime day or night. For those of us who are not as fortunate, the situation is quite different. This is especially true if you live in an apartment. Picture it, it’s two in the morning, you’re up with an open bottle of wine and you want to listen to music. You have a neighbor with bat ears who can hear the click of the on switch on your pre-amp. An excellent solution to this problem is headphones. Being an audiophile, you will require a set of high-end headphones.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAudeze is a manufacturer of very high quality headphones. The LCD-2 is their original headphone but now is the entry level in a total of four models. According to the manufacturer, the goal is to use the latest in design and materials to produce headphones that produce a dynamic and open sound with extended and full bass.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eTo achieve this unique sound quality, the LCD-2s have an open, circumaural planar, magnetic design, featuring high-grade neodymium magnets. Planar magnetic transducers typically consist of two main components: a diaphragm with circuit and magnet arrays. The “planar” in planar magnetics refers to the magnetic field that’s distributed in the same plane (parallel) to the diaphragm. Planar magnetic diaphragms are thin and lightweight compared to much heavier moving-coil or dome diaphragms found in “dynamic” drivers. This thin diaphragm is suspended in the magnetic fields created by the magnetic arrays. The planar magnetic diaphragm has a printed circuit spread across the surface of a thin-film substrate. When the circuit is energized with an audio signal it interacts with the magnetic field and produces an electromagnetic force that moves the diaphragm back and forth creating sound.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFurther, the force created by the magnetic field is distributed across most of the diaphragm surface, the planar magnetic diaphragm moves faster and with far greater accuracy to the input signal. The magnetic force that drives the lightweight diaphragm delivers rapid acceleration thus achieving a wide frequency response, low distortion and excellent sound quality. Because the circuit pattern is spread flat across the diaphragm surface it can dissipate the heat generated by the current passing through it more efficiently. Additionally, planar magnetic transducers have few moving parts and can maintain performance without any sonic degradation. Dynamic drivers continuously degrade in performance over their life due to a multitude of moving parts and use of glue joints.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe circuits found in planar magnetic diaphragms present an almost purely resistive load to amplifiers, making it easy to drive.  The impedance over the entire frequency range is completely flat vs. dynamic speaker, which could have variances in impedance values over the frequency range. Audeze employs a number of proprietary techniques that improve upon basic planar magnetic design, including the integration of unique, ultra-thin diaphragms and stronger and more optimized magnetic fields and circuit patterns. Audeze’s goal is to bring the best in planar magnetic design and continuing to improve the personal audio experience.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eSound\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe headphones are packed in a rugged yet attractive carrying case. Included with the headphones is a 2.5M (8.2 Ft,) 6.35 MM (1\/4 in.) to dual 4 pin mini XLR cable and a 6.35 mm ( ¼ in. to 3.5 MM) 1\/8 in. stereo adaptor.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAt first listen, the Audeze LCD-2 struck me with their ability to float a three dimensional sound stage. Granted the stage is spread between your ears, yet, it is fully populated from left to right and front to back and where present in the recording. I have to admit that the ability of these headphones to create a three dimensional soundstage that exceeds the abilities of some loud speakers is more than a little surprising. Could the width of the stage depend upon the width of the head of the listener? A question for the manufacturer, I guess. For this review, I used the excellent\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003ca target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.audiophilia.com\/reviews\/2016\/5\/23\/the-burson-audio-soloist-class-a-headphone-amplifierpreamplifier?rq=burson\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"\u003eBurson Soloist\u003c\/a\u003e\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003eHeadphone amplifier.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe instrumental timbres were full and rich reminiscent of the best qualities of tubes. This was accompanied by a sense of remarkable speed, transparency and openness. The CD “Profiles”, Thelonious Monk, [Riverside RCD 30070-2], the instrumental detail and that of the recording venues lend a sense of realism I have not heard before and, I have listened to this disk many times in the past. The studio recordings are easily distinguished from the live ones. The piano is clear with all of the shimmer and decay that one could want.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe ability of the LCD-2s to produce bass was another surprise. It was far fuller and deeper than I ever expected. Cut 2 of the Etta James CD, “Life, Love and the Blues”, has a full and deep bass line throughout the song and is easily reproduced on a full range speaker. This line was also reproduced without fatigue on the LCD-2s. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying that the bass of the headphones has the same punch and slam of a full range floor stander but, given the top to bottom balance coupled with it’s ability to reproduce low frequencies, you do not get the sense that you are loosing anything sonically.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhether it’s the full, wide dynamics of the Chicago Symphony, “Also Sprach Zarathustra”, (RCA Living Stereo, Richard Strauss in High Fidelity, RCA-09026-61494-2), conducted by Fritz Reiner, or the intimate phrasings of Claire Martin, “Old Boyfriends” (Honest-HON CD 5028, the LCD-2s not only handled the music with ease, they never failed to make the emotional connection between the musicians and this listener.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIf it was the intention of the manufacturer to produce a pair of headphones with exceptional speed, transparency and dynamics, Audeze has succeeded admirably. The LCD-2s possess a quality of sound and level of performance that make them a serious reference level component. The excellent selectivity of the MR 80 (210 kHz wide at 60 dB down) permits tuning to stations that are impossible to receive on ordinary tuners. After the mixer the signal is electronically switched to go either directly to the IF amplifier or to go through a quartz crystal filter. The SUPER NARROW selectivity position adds a 4 pole - 4 zero crystal filter to the other 5 IF filters. SUPER NARROW permits receiving stations never heard before with most other FM tuners. The 5 stages of IF amplification provide the necessary gain to reduce noise in the signal and interference from other stations. The 5 IF stages use piezoelectric fixed frequency filters in place of normal tuned circuits so the IF stages will always stay in alignment, even with age. The signal strength indicator column is summed off of all 5 IF stages instead of just 1 so it is looking at the signal strength throughout the entire IF system. Following the selectivity section of the IF amplifier is the LIMITER. A total gain of 80 dB is used in this circuit. The use of very high gain in the limiter circuit produces hard limiting with very good impulse noise rejection. Limiter bandwidth is greater than 50 MHz, producing excellent detector capture characteristics. A broadband Foster-Seeley discriminator is used as the detector. This detector coupled with the broadband limiter produces unmeasurable noise and distortion. The heart of the multiplex section is a new third generation phase locked loop (PLL) stereo decoder integrated circuit (IC). This PLL IC incorporates two special systems, an automatic variable separation control circuit to reduce background noise when receiving weak stereo stations, and tri-level digital waveform generation which eliminates interference from SCA signals and from the sidebands of adjacent channel FM signals. The variable separation control is operated from the IF amplifier's signal strength detector. A smooth transition is provided from mono to stereo or from stereo to mono at weak signal levels to provide the optimum signal to noise ratio and best stereo separation for the prevailing signal conditions. The circuit operates only during stereo reception. It switches automatically to monophonic if the 19 kHz pilot tone is absent. In the PLL the internal oscillator operates at 228kHz, locked onto the 19kHz pilot tone. The 228kHz, feeds a 3 stage Johnson counter via a binary divider to generate a series of square waves. Suitably connected NAND gates and exclusive OR gates produce the tri-level drive waveform for the various demodulators in the circuit. The usual square waveforms have been replaced in the PLL and decoder sections by tri-level waveforms. These tri-level forms contain no harmonics which are multiples of 2 or 3. This eliminates frequency translation and detection of interference from the side-bands of adjacent stations since the third harmonic of the sub-carrier (114kHz) is excluded. It also eliminates interference from SCA broadcasts since the third harmonic of the pilot tone (57kHz) is excluded. Unwanted spurious audible components and phase jitter in the PLL are Inherently eliminated by this technique. Additional advantages of the phase locked loop stereo demodulation are the elimination of inductors to minimize drift, integral lamp driving capability to indicate the presence of the 19kHz pilot carrier, excellent channel separation over the entire audio frequency range, extremely low distortion, low output impedance, and transient-free mono\/stereo switching. Following the MPX decoder is the three position de-emphasis switch. The three different positions allow the MR 80 to be used in North America with standard 75ms de-emphasis and in Western Europe and the Far East with 50ms de-emphasis. The 25ms position is for use with an external noise reduction adapter. An electronic blend filter circuit, implemented with two J-FETs of a quad J-FET package, is used to reduce out of phase noise when in the stereo mode and tuned to a weak station. This filter is actually a twin-T bandpass that blends the high and low frequencies, leaving separation unaffected at midfrequencies. This results in a greatly improved stereo image when the filter is required. Special design attention has been given to the power supply section. Nine separate power circuits are used. Six of these are regulated to prevent loss of performance during a brown out. The - 15, - 5.2, 5, 15 and 30v use integrated circuit 3 terminal regulators, while the 3ma current source is made with discrete transistors because of the high voltage on the input terminal. The remaining voltages are used for the headphone amplifier and the touch control reference signal driver. Mclntosh, recognizing the need for improved reliability, has designed a new circuit to drive incandecent lamps. This new circuit prevents the filaments from failing due to notching when operated on direct current. This failure mode can reduce lamp life from one half to one tenth of the data sheet value. We then ran the unit in one of our house systems for quite some time, because we wanted to utilize this flagship preamp from Audio Research.  It is a difficult unit to part with. We took this unit in with a pair of Audio Research Classic 150 Amps that we finally just went through and installed 16 new Svetlana 6550 tubes in and set the bias. Close inspection revealed that ‘someone’ had meddled with the diamond tipped needle, and like an acrobat it was now in a most contorted configuration, bent 180 degrees with some cute wiggles too. [\u003cem\u003eI introduce to you, fellow audiophiles, Karl Sigman, the most patient man on the planet - Ed\u003c\/em\u003e]\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eMy audiophile friends commiserated with me, but they also argued that I take it in stride on a positive note–I now had a reason (excuse?) to upgrade my cartridge. I became a believer in no time. And so began my careful consideration of what such an upgrade might be. This lead me to the subject of this review: Grado Labs Statement v2 Cartridge. It is their top-of-the-line at $3,500; the jewel of their Statement Series 2 cartridges. (Others in the Statement Series 2 line: Reference2 ($1500), Master2 ($1000), Sonata2 ($600), and Platinum2 ($350).) I am most grateful to John Chen, Director of Sales for Grado Labs, for loaning me the cartridge and handing it over personally to VPI Industries (who I am also very grateful to) whose Director of Electrical Engineering, Michael Bettinger, expertly mounted it for me on a turntable (VPI Prime, to be reviewed soon) and gave me some advice\/tips for its proper use.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe Statement v2 is unusual in looks, construction and specifications. Hand-crafted at Grado Labs in Brooklyn, New York, USA, it is a wooden-body cartridge of a fixed coil design, but using a small bit of iron (instead of a magnet) in between the coils, a design referred to as moving iron (MI) as opposed to moving magnet (MM), and different from moving coil (MC) in which the coils are on the stylus cantilever and doing the moving. The iron bit is lighter in weight than when a magnet is used in the MM case, thus lowering tracking force even further and increasing the tracking accuracy. Because it has a relatively low output of 1.0 mv as compared to MM, the Statement v2 needs a minimum of 56 db of gain, thus requiring the MC mode of a phono stage, but the Statement v2 also requires a high resistive loading of 10k ohms–47k ohms, as opposed to the much smaller (say) 100 ohms of MC. So this indeed is an unusual cartridge somewhere between MM and MC in its requirements for use, and also different from standard MI types (my description above is a very basic one of what MI is; the Statement v2 is much more sophisticated in its use of MI). The use of wood in their cartridge started in 1996 with their ‘Reference Series’; its purpose is to control resonance.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe earlier version of this cartridge was the Grado Statement Series v1, and according to Mr Chen, the new and improved v2 has a chassis of higher mass, which due to a hefty investment in state-of-the-art coil winding machines by Grado Labs allows much more effective distribution of the mass within the chassis. And all internal components have been improved, especially the precision of the parts. According to their website ‘It utilizes four reconfigured coils, a precision machined ultra-low mass generating system (lower than any moving coil cartridge), a boron cantilever and a diamond cut to Grado’s strict specifications. All this is hand assembled and housed in an Australian Jarrah wood enclosure’.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eWhen new, the Statement Series 2 cartridge is displayed in the center of a green velvet back- ground within a wooden jewelry-like box that is very reminiscent of a small-sized old style Cuban cigar box. On the box top sketched in the wood is ‘Grado and ‘Brooklyn, New York’. I should add: once the cartridge had been mounted, I put that box in a safe place, with a plan–in case I ultimately decided to acquire this cart–to put a special piece of jewelry in it for my wife for some future celebratory occasion.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe history of Grado Labs is itself very interesting. Joe Grado founded Grado Labs in 1953 in Brooklyn and is the originator of the stereo moving coil (MC) cartridge, and although he held the patent for it, he eventually concluded that moving iron was a better way to go for sound quality; he died recently, in 2015. Since 1990, the company has been run by his nephew John Grado (President and CEO), and recently (2013) John’s son Jonathan became Vice President of Marketing. Since the 1990s, exceptional headphones have become a highly regarded addition to the Grado products line, which today is probably what they are mostly known for; recent headphone models use wood too. The company is still located in Brooklyn, NY. And if you are wondering: The 'JMJ’ on the front of the wooden case of the Statement cartridge? Many very high-end phono stages, some with prices even exceeding $10,000, focus only on MC cartridges and hence do not offer the high impedance loads (47k Ohms for example) that are necessary. On the other hand, the few phono stages that I came across offering moving iron options only offered a gain at most in the 40dB range, not high enough for optimal use of the Statement v2. And it has a 47k Ohm impedance load setting. By experimenting, I found that I preferred (after hours of break in of the cartridge) the 63dB gain setting. I sent the analog out to my preamp (PS Audio BHK Signature) using balanced (XLR) cables. I thus had a pure all-analog route. (I could also go digital by having the NuWave convert on-the-fly to 24\/96 PCM or DSD 64 and then go directly into my DAC; but I will not be discussing that fascinating route in this review.) Sadly, the NuWave is no longer manufactured, so I will try to offer the reader here some other options. (Keep in mind that unlike the NuWave, most phono stages use RCA out to a preamp, not XLR).\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe Schiit Audio Mani at $129 is an absolute steal. Included in its various settings is a 59dB gain setting as well as a 47k Ohm impedance load setting. Voila! I was able to acquire one in time for this review. It weighs only 1 pound and is 5” x 3.5” x 1.25”; it fits in your hand. Not in the same league as the NuWave, of course, but it certainly worked, and surprisingly well. It is not a toy, trust me. I plan to keep it as a very useful experimental\/testing tool at the very least. As another example: At $750 there is the Musical Surroundings Phonomena II+ Phono Preamp.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eI also lucked out on trying out a vacuum tube based phono stage: The classic Ear 834P. (Many thanks to friend and neighbor Jim Austin (Stereophile) for lending me this on such short notice.) I was able to use it in the MM mode (which has a 49dB gain, and impedance load of about 49kOhms) by increasing the volume level on my preamp (from (say) 40\/100 up to 55\/100). It sounded very nice and warm with the Statement v2 but a dash of distortion came in at higher volumes as expected because of the lower than optimal gain.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eFinal word: If Schiit Audio can produce a $129 phono stage that does the trick, I can only assume that other companies with higher-end models can easily modify their phono stages to accommodate the needs of MI; I hope they do.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eInitial reaction to the sound quality\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eGrado Labs advised at least 50 hours (playing time) of burn in for the Statement v2. But right from the start I noticed some significant positive sound qualities:\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e        • a dead quiet\/black background\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e        • a surprising lack of surface noise (including even pops and clicks and such) that was remarkable\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e        • an authentic\/natural sound for acoustic music with lovely harmonics and rich with tex- tures\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eVery impressive.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eWhat was missing were (a) more body as a whole to back all this up, (b) a larger more 3-D sound stage, and (c) more minute details in the high end and low end frequencies which seemed distant. I thus patiently made a habit of playing 5-6 records per day (some I played 2-3 times each) over the next weeks for burn in to kick in. Unlike using digital, this required a lot more focus and paying attention. But it also offered me a serious chance to search in my closet hunting for LPs that have been buried there for decades. I found some gems.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eListening after sufficient burn in\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eAfter about 40hrs of burn in I was rewarded by a noticeable increase in the overall body of the sound, and an enlarged soundstage. Along with that came deep bass, ample air and articulate high ends–the midrange was no longer alone. I became increasingly enamored with classical music with this cart, because of its so true expression of timbre and textures. In fact (truth be told), I spent almost all of my listening with the Statement v2 in this review on classical music–it impressed me in that genre so much. I found myself increasingly bringing out into the living room–and letting remain there–various LPs from my past that before had been kept in the closet.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eHere was one of my very favorites using the Statement v2 cartridge: a 3-LP box set from 1975; Handel, Complete Organ Concertos Op. 4 and Op. 7, with the Concentus Musicus Wien music ensemble using original instruments, with Herbert Tachezi on organ, and conducted by Nikolaus Harnoncourt (Telefunken, Das Alte Werk). The richness and natural sound won me over, and made me appreciate the organ and Handel’s passion for its use in music; some of the pieces were very uplifting as well. The 3 LPs were in pristine shape after more than 40 years in my possession (I bought that set as an undergraduate student in about 1976). I was saddened to learn that Tachezi passed away only months ago in December 2016. Why did I wait so long to enjoy this LP?\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eAnd then there was this more recently acquired 45RPM Supercut symphony: Joseph Haydn, Symphony No. 101 in D major, Robin Ticciati, Scottish Camber Orchestra, Linn Records (2015) which is one of my prized reference LPs. The Statement v2 brought out considerably more depth and nuance in the stringed instruments, better dynamics, and such quiets. I had better take really fine care of this LP. Ditto for Stravinsky: The Firebird, Antal Dorati (Conductor), London Symphony Orchestra (Mercury Living Presence) (Recorded in 1959). It sounded spectacular with Statement v2, and what a soundstage. The tympani alone were coming from back to front and shook my apartment-but with such delicacy (if that makes any sense).\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eOverall, in cooking terms the Statement v2 brought out deep, rich, natural, tasty flavors just as a savory sauce does, or some simple herbs or salt, pepper and butter do when used on fresh basic main ingredients. Take, for example, fresh wild Porcini mushrooms. Grill them, but instead of just plain, use a dash of olive oil, thyme, garlic, salt and pepper before grilling them: A poor man’s steak becomes fit for a king.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eRecently I visited the home of Harry Weisfeld of VPI Industries, at an event, and coincidently noted that he had the same cartridge on a VPI Titan turntable (and I got to hear it; it sounded outstanding). He was still experimenting with appropriate settings. Now (2 weeks later) as I was ending the writing of this review, I called him and asked him what he now thought of the Statement v2. He was still using it, and this is what he said:\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cem\u003eIt is beyond belief that this cartridge at only $3, 500 can compete with and even best cartridges that cost $10, 000 − $12, 000.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eNow, I have heard some expensive cartridges on others’ audio systems and atAudio Shows, including the Lyra Atlas, Ortofon MC Anna, among others. I do believe the Statement v2 is competitive with cartridges well above its $3, 500 price.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eSummary\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe Grado Labs Statement v2 is a highly unusual cartridge that displays remarkably low surface noise and distortion, addictive natural sound for acoustical instruments, including lovely harmonics, a fine sound stage and wide dynamic range. At $3, 500 it favorably competes with carts well above its price point. If you are careful in choosing an appropriate phono stage to run it, you will be richly rewarded. And one need not spend a fortune on a phono stage that will work well with it.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eSuffice to say that I have already placed something inside that wooden jewelry-like box that the cart came in when new, and no, it is not the cartridge. As I write, I am listening to Bartok (EMI, 1979 2-LP set from France), ‘pour les enfants’, Michel Beroff on piano, using the Statement v2 while sitting on the couch with my young daughter, the same one who is perhaps responsible for this review and she is as enamored with the live and natural sound of the piano as I am. Is the Statement v2 fit for a King? It is not. With a good \u003c\/span\u003emachine and the right equalization, 60 year old tapes are relatively quiet while new 15 ips 2 \u003cspan\u003etracks are “spooky” quiet. The Grado gives you a feel of what this is like, while tracking like a train on steel rails, as stylus chatter is virtually non-existent.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"font_9\"\u003eThe most important part of this presentation is the ultimate smoothness this cartridge can produce without breaking a sweat. When listening to the Hugh Masakela disc the explosion of transients from a black background is absolutely tape like and gives rise to that old reference “goosebumps”! This is only possible if you load the cartridge at 10K or more ohms. I tried it at the normal MC loadings and found it to be good but constricted. The use of 10K or 20K loading opens up the upper mid-range and top while still keeping that smoothness and lack of grain. I found 47K to be a bit bright, but if you have a treble control on your preamp or speaker, this is easily fixed.\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"font_9\"\u003e \u003cspan\u003eI found the best match for the cartridge to be a standard 12” JMW 3D arm. The cartridge requires the second outrigger pivot point to track at its best and to completely remove any of the \u003c\/span\u003eGrado “dance” and produce tight clean bass and very stable images. The oscilloscope representation of a stereo signal was an almost perfect 45 degree line that varies slightly with \u003cspan\u003efrequency but remained stable over the run from 50 to 10K. It tracked the Shure test record very well, only slightly missing the toughest band. I used three rubber weights on the anti-skate for the test but none for listening. There were no issues of mistracking or cantilever displacement not using anti-skate.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"font_9\"\u003eMy favorite test is the UA Steve Lawrence “Till There Was You”. This cartridge put Steve in the room between the speakers and a full soundstage way past the loudspeaker (KEF Blades) boundaries. It felt like I was listening to a tape with 55 db of separation instead of a cartridge with a promise of 30+ db of separation. The record jacket explains and shows how the microphones and instruments were laid out and the Grado accurately placed them in the same position as the drawing.\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"font_9\"\u003e \u003cspan\u003eThe special cut on “Hatari” where they spaced the grooves to let the bass get cut into the vinyl without any compression put you in the jeep with John Wayne chasing that rhino! The Atlas has more dynamic power, but the Grado was no slouch and dynamic enough to give you rattled teeth fillings. I was pretty blown away. The midrange detail is uncanny. What it lacks in richness and fullness, it certainly makes up for in it’s transparency and separation. However, the problem is that the upper mids are emphasized, resulting in a little harshness, especially with respect to male vocals in big rock choruses. So, the RS2e is not an ideal rock and roll headphone. I was expecting the RS2e to have very piercing highs. Not the case. I put the highs through the usual Miles Davis test, and I made it through Flamenco Sketches with my ears intact. At the same time, there was no lost texture or breathiness. It also captures the higher frequencies of snares and cymbals incredibly well. This is, by far, the best jazz headphone I’ve ever tried at this price point. As for classical, I was equally impressed. Listening to the strings, I felt a perfect balance between smoothness and transparency. Again, another record breaker in my book; World’s Best Highs in the $400-$500 price range. This review will solely discuss the wired variant.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eDESIGN \/ FEATURES\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eStarting off, those with a keen eye may have noticed that the name of this headphone is also used in Focal’s motto, “Listen Beyond”. And the tagline for this headphone being “Anywhere, Anytime”. Both of which are fitting for this line of headphones.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cmeta charset=\"utf-8\"\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFor one, despite it being an over-ear headphone which are commonly large and lack mobility, the LISTEN is listed in the mobility section of the website and I can’t disagree. The whole headphone is in a compact curve with as few protrusions and awkward edges as possible to make it easy to put on and off. With the adjustable headband shut closed, the entire outer band attachment becomes visually smooth like a horseshoe.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAnd secondly, the motto “Listen Beyond” is true again as we are met with a removable 1.4m slim cable with a multi-function remote and microphone. It’s a nearly full-size over-ear headphone sure, but want to go out? Take it with you! If you want to go even further beyond, Focal offers the wireless model as well.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cmeta charset=\"utf-8\"\u003e\u003cmeta charset=\"utf-8\"\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eGoing further beyond also applies to the features that this headphone is outfitted with. It touts a headband with “optimum comfort and weight distrubtion”, 22mm thick thermosensitive memory foam ear pads, 40mm Mylar\/Titanium drivers, and the removeable multi-functional cable I mentioned earlier. Wow, that’s a mouthful of tech. As it’s made for mobility, it came with a soft travel case and airplane adapter.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBUILD\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eA surprising aspect of the LISTEN was its weight and the distribution of it. While the official spec number is fairly normal (273g), I found it lightweight for its visual appearance  and the features it touted.  When the words Over-Ear, removable cord, memory foam, 40mm custom drivers, and microphone come together in my mind, I was imagining something easily in the 290g+ range with the some above average clamping. But what I got was a comfortable headphone with soft pads that I could keep on my head for a few hours at a time.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe thermosensitive memory foam pads are a great addition to the LISTEN although they do not change the playing field. Issues I have with on\/over-ear headphones as someone with large ears that protrude are clamping, heat, and long term comfort. The pads on the LISTEN work better at getting rid of all three of those ailaments than something like the Audio Technica M50X. The M50X clamped a bit hard, made my ears sweaty and was not wearable for me for more than an hour at a time. With the LISTEN, I could go for 3+ hours at work without taking them off. I could still feel warmth and heat in the cups while wearing them, but the thermosensitive material does an OK job at not making it go past critical temps. As for the pad’s material feel on my skin, I found them to be comfortable and didn’t have any itching or rashes after long term usages. Taking these into account, the LISTEN offers great luxury for those looking for comfortable over-ear headphones in the $200-$300 range. Just don’t expect it to be anything ground shattering.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eSOUND:\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cmeta charset=\"utf-8\"\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe biggest “aha” moment I had listening to the LISTEN (pun not intended) was when I first heard it directly out of the box. I believe that some of the best ways of introducing someone to a headphone’s sound is on your reaction to it and what you compare it to when you first hear it. For me, the thing that first came to my mind was that the Focal LISTEN almost emulates sound you would hear from a car with a “premium” trim audio system. My experience of jamming out to music in cars comes soley from the Boston Acoustics speakers in my Chevrolet Camaro and the Harmon Kardon speakers in my mother’s Mercedes; they were trim selection options available from the dealer and not custom installed.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis comparison stems from the way the LISTEN presents its sound which feels to be coming from modular units. The bass rumbles through in space as if it was situated behind and around you as it was in a car. And the vocals jut out directly from your sides and front with a slight veil on it just as you would have due to the physical distance and placement of real world car mid-range speakers.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cmeta charset=\"utf-8\"\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThe first albums I tested were modern pop, EDM, and trance due to the LISTEN’s solid dose of bass and held back vocals. I put on The Weekend’s second album, \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cem\u003eBeauty Behind the Madness\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cspan\u003e (2015) and forwarded to his hit track “The Hill”. The first section of the track which was calm displayed the headphone’s ability at producing environmental background sounds in the track. A mixture of synths and strummed were quietly played at this part yet I could make out their distinct character and presence. Getting into the chorus, we are met with the strong bass that the closed back headphone produces. It doesn’t have high impact but it characters ‘weight’ to the bass note it produces. It would be wrong to call it muddy like something from a Sony XB series, but rather that it produces a characteristic low rumble that consumer dedicated subwoofers have. It’s that iconic low independent sounding ‘boom’ that really completed this song which is now known for its famous heavy subwoofer hits. It wasn’t an eye watering listening experience, but I was thoroughly satisfied. It reminded me of the sound you hear and sensation you feel as you listen to your favorite pop song while driving down a twisty road with the windows down. It’s you, your car, and your favorite song with its famous chorus that you sing along with.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cmeta charset=\"utf-8\"\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eSeeing as it had a laid back vocal and a good ability to reproduce soundstage, I played E.S. Posthumus next. They are a group renowned for their 21\u003csup\u003est\u003c\/sup\u003e\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003ecentury classical and epic styled music.  I started from their first album\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cem\u003eUnearthed\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e(2005) and played the title track “Antissa”. The track is named after the ruined city on the Greek island of Lesbos that was destroyed by the Romans in 168BCE. The artist group named each track specifically after ruined cities due to the feelings that they would invoke and this is evident in the song “Antissa”. To start, we have a beautiful woman’s voice singing in a sorrowful tone at first before the tone shifts into that of remembrance and yearning for what was lost. This happens all the while a magnificent sense of vastness overfills from the headphones. The LISTEN’s were able to capture this emotion and amplify its feelings due to the modularity of the sonic elements. It wasn’t a solid blast of sound coming at you without separation as you would have from bargain bin earphones, but rather a distinct group of notes that peacefully come in waves.  The sound of the high range tweeters that are often absent with the LISTEN’s show themselves carefully here as the singer reaches the upper echelons of her voice. We are still firmly planted in the upper-mid range section but the LISTEN’s teased their ability to deliver more here.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI next played “Blues for the Ladies” by Tommy Schneller Band to try and bring out more of the highs from the headphones. It’s a jazzy song filled with a good helping of saxophone and smooth male vocals. This song, like the one before also has a great stage presence allowing for a terrific spatial sound from the LISTENs. Despite being closed back, songs with spatial qualities excel with the headphone. I was impressed again with how wide everything sounded. However, the one thing I was looking for (high range) was not overly apparent. This headphone does well up to the upper-mid range but has a quick drop in its ability to deliver (at proper audible amplitude) the higher ranges of the human frequency spectrum.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eTo sum up the sound of the Focal LISTEN, I would consider it to have a modular sound presentation with mild mids, great spatial capabilities, a solid bass, and the ability to pick out individual elements easily. That didn't make sense, the iDo was hooked up via the iPod's 30-pin digital output, which I always think of as fixed in level. My iPod Classic was the only source for the listening tests, and most of the music was encoded in Apple Lossless. Even with the super efficient JH-13 in-ears the iDo was dead quiet, and added absolutely no noise or hiss. The iDo worked its magic with most of the headphones, but it was less terrific with the Audeze LCD-2. There the sound was thin and I felt the iDo was out of its comfort zone. Returning to listening via my iPod's headphone jack and internal DAC was a severe letdown and robbed the 'Angels of their organic feel and flow. The sound of the voices, drums and guitars hardened and the music's power took a nosedive. The soundstage wasn't any wider with the iDo, but it felt more spacious when the NuForce was on the job. To put it another way, the iDo made most of the headphones sound like better, more expensive headphones.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe Black Keys' \"Brothers\" album is always in heavy rotation on my iPod, and the iDo delved deep into the 'Keys' garage blues bliss. Bass was deep, punchy, and nicely controlled; the fuzzed-out guitar textures had just the right flavor of grit. Tasty, very tasty indeed.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eLater on, I compared the iDo with my DACport USB DAC\/headphone amp while playing iTunes on my Mac mini. I have to say the two DACs sounded very different. The DACport's sound with the solo drum tracks from the \"Best of Chesky Jazz and More Audiophile Tests, Volume 2\" sampler CD was fuller, richer, and more dynamically alive than what I heard from the iDo. The 'Do had a leaner tonal balance, but it seemed to have better resolution of fine detail than the DACport. All in all, I preferred the DACport, but the iDo wasn't totally clobbered by the comparison.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI also used the iDo as a \"dock,\" with its coax digital output feeding a PS Audio Perfect Wave DAC in my high-end system.
